Already at the age of 18, Eliud Kipchoge won a World Championship medal in the 5,000 meters and would go on to win 3 other global medals at that distance. In 2013, Eliud Kipchoge only began to show signs of what was to come in the future. It was then that he won and broke the course record in his very first marathon. It's almost hard to believe what would follow – 11 official marathon victories including 8 marathon majors, and the Olympic Games. Twice he has set course records in the London Marathon, and of course his famous world record run in the Berlin Marathon in 2018 and then in 2022 (where he also broke world records for 30k, 35k and 40k along the way). Kipchoge has won two Olympic gold medals in the marathon: in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and in Tokyo in 2021.
Despite all these great performances in official competitions, Eliud Kipchoge's greatest achievement as a runner is not an official record. But he is the first and only person to have run a marathon distance in under 2 hours. He ran a marathon in 1:59:40 at the INEOS Challenge on a closed track in Vienna, Austria in October 2019. Eliud was the 2018 UN's Kenyan Person, and in 2018 and 2019 the IAAF (now WAF) Male Athlete of the Year. Last but certainly not least, Eliud Kipchoge is a family man, a father of three, who lives and trains near Eldoret in Kenya.
Some of Eliud Kipchoge's merits:
- World Marathon Record (2:01:09) – Berlin 2022
